We open with the photo of a fairly large spider from Mysore. Casually referred to as the ‘Signature spider’ this is a female Argiope anasuja, belonging to a genus of spiders called the St. Andrew’s Cross spiders.
These spiders built two-dimensional orb webs, along with special stabilimenta or ornamental decoration whose function has not yet been fully understood. The Argiope anasuja builds characteristic X-shaped stabilimenta on its web.
This particular spider was sighted at Karanji lake in Mysore, and this picture has been a pioneering force in the creation of this site.
